San Francisco-based PacTel Corp, a subsidiary of Pacific Telesis Group is focusing expansion of its cellular telephone business on Europe and the Pacific Rim: to date the company has won licences in Germany and Portugal to set up digital cellular systems under the Global System for Mobile Telecommunications programme, but it now wants to expand its cellular business into France, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands and Spain; in France it is now looking for partners as it believes that the French government will allow a third cellular operator to compete for market share with France Telecom SA and Societe Francaise du Radiotelephonie SA.
