Herndon, Virginia-based Zenith Data Systems a division of Packard Bell NEC Corp has unveiled its Pentium Pro MH4000, the newest addition to its Express5800 server range (CI 3150). The company also revealed further details of its server strategy saying it aims to expand into the lower-end server segment and is seeking to grow its share of the total server market from around 3% to between 15% and 20% to become the leader in the world-wide market. ZDS says the latest product will be targeted at small to medium sized enterprises and is powered by up to four 200mhz Pentium Pro processors with up to 512KB Level 2 cache integrated into each processor and 64MB ECC RAM, expandable to 4Gb. However, the company sought to play down the imminent release of its Pentium II range which will at least make the company’s present offerings look dated, if not obsolete. Luis Patecho, vice president of the server product group commented: I think people will be surprised at the Pentium II…they won’t get the performance they expect because of the way it manages cache which is important for use in databases. However he laments; even in large corporations people are focused on the Megahertz figures Patecho admitted: We’ll be releasing Pentium IIs in August…It’s a lost argument – even if the Pentium performs better it’s no good if they don’t sell. It’s easier for us just to sell the things – Pentium IIs. But he added significantly: We won’t be selling quads under Pentium II – it’s just a transition. Quads will be available on the Deschutes (Intel’s next generation Pentium II hybrid) due out in the second quarter of next year.
