Packard Bell NEC Inc has announced it will eliminate 400 jobs from its 8,000 strong workforce by the end of the year in a drive to reduce costs. Two divisions will be relocated to the company’s North American headquarters in Sacramento, California in a move the giant PC maker hopes will create better economies of scale. The company’s build-to-order Versa notebook manufacturing unit will be relocated from Fife, Washington, as will the customer services and technical support unit currently based in Boxborough, Massachusetts. The net result, says Packard Bell, will be an extra 300 jobs at the Sacramento HQ.
