The management and technology consultancy company PA Consulting Group Plc of London has launched PACS version 8 of its on-line manufacturing control system for IBM’s System 38: the new manufacturing resources planning software – which analyses financial, labour and capacity rather than just monitoring stock and work in progress has been designed to take advantage of IBM’s forthcoming mid-range Silverlake. Cohu Inc’s San Diego-based Delta Design Inc subsidiary says it has successfully installed the first flexible, integrated system for the final, or back-end, operations of semiconductor manufacturing at Motorola Inc’s Microprocessor Test Facility in Austin, Texas: the installation concludes a unique co-operative one-year effort between Delta and the Motorola Microprocessor Group and the system integrates a series of semiconductor manufacturing steps previously performed as discrete operations on independent, free-standing pieces of equipment; Delta reckons that with current technology, it can deliver an integrated, flexible semiconductor manufacturing system that can handle most device types, including surface mount components.
