An HP competition to unearth the oldest working HP-UX server led to the doors of the college, where a machine has been running business-critical applications for the Oxford University Press (OUP), a department of the university, since 1993.
OUP’s prize is a new entry-class HP Integrity server, plus HP installation, a license for HP-UX 11i and three-year support.
Technical architect Geoff Butler conceded that it was almost time to upgrade the HP-UX equipment, which stores and manages the OUP’s world-renowned English language research, even though there’s life in the old dog yet.
Runner-up Celanese Acetate has been using HP-UX since the 1980s to support its 24/7 manufacturing process, while Apollo Fire Detectors still relies on its first HP-UX server as part of its enterprise resource planning (ERP) software testing.
