The Open Software Foundation duly launched its fourth Request for Technology yesterday, calling for technologies to provide a Distributed Management Environment and a set of system management applications: the idea is to add to Unix some of the systems management tools and facilities that have been an essential part of mainframe and proprietary operating systems for years – back-ups, software installation and distribution, security, licensing, restore and archiving, print spooling, accounting, user management and security; the technical evaluation will be conducted by the European development office in Munich, responses are wanted by September 21, completed submissions have to arrive by December 15, and must be ready for commercial shipment during the first half of 1991.
