Despite widespread scepticism that extends even to members of the renegade Unix club, the Open Software Foundation claims that development of its OSF/1 Unix, due out in November, is on track. Ira Goldstein, the Foundation’s vice-president of research and advanced development, told our sister paper Unigram.X last week that the effort, believed by many to be significantly behind schedule, would produce its third snapshot this month. There are no red flags now, he said. According to Goldstein, the operating system will be functionally frozen in July. The last snapshot, effectively the OSF/1 beta version, will be delivered in September. Some Foundation members, however, are already in the process of implementing OSF/1 code on their machines as it is developed.
