Orchid Technology, the PC multimedia arm of Micronics Computers Inc, will ship its NuSound 3D audio board into Europe this month and the US next month. It uses the Vortex AU8820 from audio specialists Aureal Semiconductor Inc to create three dimensional positional sound from two speakers. This gives the impression that the sound cues are coming from ahead, behind the sides, above and below. NuSound is designed for Windows95 or Windows NT operating systems. It offers best results with studio-quality 64 voice Wavetable Synthesis and delivers 300 audio MIPS for audio processing, which the company said frees up the system CPU for faster video and other tasks. NuSound 3D supports both A3D from Aureal and DirectSound 3D from Microsoft Corp. The NuSound 3D bundle includes A3D supported games Jedi Knight: Ambush at Altyr 5 by Lucas Arts Entertainment and the Shipwreckers by Psygnosis. NuSound 3D has a suggested price of $69.00.
