Following the meeting Intel Corp hosted in Santa Clara, California a few weeks back to preview some of its Merced technologies, there has been a second flurry of press material supporting the company’s 64-bit IA-64 architecture. Following Merced endorsements from Sequent, Unisys and others – many of which were utterly devoid of any news – Oracle says it will optimize Oracle8 for IA-64 and Merced clustering using the Virtual Interface (VI) Architecture. It’ll initially be optimized to support 64-bit versions of Windows NT and SCO UnixWare, the two operating systems that will be widely available for Merced system vendors.
