Oracle Corp is following Lotus Development Corp’s Notes and Microsoft Corp Exchange to try to bar the door of the enterprise to Netscape Communications Corp’s promised Orion kit. Orion is Netscape’s next-generation SuiteSpot server whose pieces are six to 18 months away, with InterOffice, the groupware once code-named Pegasus (CI No 2,939). Inter-Office is part of Oracle’s BackOffice rival, the erstwhile InterOffice suite, now renamed the Universal Server Suite to avoid confusion. In the Universal Server Suite, it is intended to be part of a total turnkey system for smaller companies. Unleashed, it is bound for the enterprise. The InterOffice messaging server is $100 per mailbox; the InterOffice document management server is $400 per con current user. They will be released as options to Universal Server.
