ORACLE ON AS/400 “A GOOD IDEA,” SAYS IBM

By CBR Staff Writer

Could IBM Corp be ready to overturn one of its longest-held canons and support third-party databases on its AS/400 minicomputers? AS/400 General manager William Zeitler told Computergram that it would be a good idea to put Oracle on [AS/400e] – or rather have them put it on. Zeitler emphasized IBM hasn’t negotiated, let alone worked with Oracle on such a plan, although he insists the division is working its way down a list of must-have technologies it wants on the systems newly re- fashioned for e-commerce. AS/400s are currently supplied with an integrated version of the DB2 database called DB/400. Last week Netscape Communications Corp committed to supporting AS/400s, and Baan Co NV is expected to announce support in the near future. Oracle’s not currently on the list but Zeitler observes that putting the database on AS/400 is already technically possible.
