In a widespread series of announcements, Oracle Corp yesterday unveiled new software that will enable users to manage other enterprise resource planning applications alongside its own software either in-house or by outsourcing the management to Oracle. The company said version 2.0 of its Enterprise Manager, to be released at the end of the year, now comes with a number of new and enhanced service pack options to enable customers to monitor and manage Microsoft Corp, Informix Corp and IBM Corp database environments as well as a new pack specifically for SAP AG ERP application management. Oracle application management pack enables users to mange their Oracle ERP applications alongside the database, providing what Jay Rossiter, VP system management products calls complete end to end management of the whole solution. Rossiter said the latest version of Enterprise Manager has been completely internet-enabled, although there will also be a fat client version available for those who need it. The Corba- compliant Version 2.0 has been rewritten in Java and the management console is accessible through any browser. It’s also capable of supporting multiple administrators at one time, Rossiter said. For users that want Oracle to monitor and manage their database and applications for them, the company also introduced Expert DBA and Expert Detect. The latter is an outsourcing service whereby Oracle monitors a customers database and/or application environment and gives advice. And the former includes the above but under the contract, Oracle can also take corrective action to remedy a problem that’s occurred or is about to occur. Expert DBA costs $90,000 a year and Expert Detect costs $2,000. Pricing for the Enterprise Manager 2.0, the enhanced diagnostics pack, the SAP pack and the Oracle applications pack will all be announced when the full products ship, at the end of the year, Rossiter said.
