Oracle Corp’s offering a new 2.1 cut of its WebServer software which can be used in conjunction with Netscape or Microsoft HTTP servers to deliver database information to browser-based applications. The new version includes an integrated Java Virtual Machine and support for Java database connectivity. WebServer includes a framework for building cartridges and linking databases with applications. It uses an Oracle Web Request Broker mechanism for performing persistent database transactions over the Web. WebServer 2.1 for Solaris is out now – an NT version is due by year-end. In other areas, Oracle has created a Spatial Data Option which enabled Universal Server users to store geographica data in their databases integrate it with other applications built upon Universal Server.
