Redwood Shores, California-based Oracle acquired the TimesTen real-time database in June 2005 and the Berkeley DB open source embedded database in February this year, to add to its own embeddable Oracle Database 10g and Database Lite 10g offerings.
The company has now maintained its commitment to the embedded database portfolio and also detailed how its sees the four technologies co-existing. Database 10 is of course Oracle’s flagship enterprise database product, but can also be configured for embedded environments.
Meanwhile, Oracle Database Lite is designed for building, deploying and managing mobile applications, as well as synchronizing with the core Database 10g product. The company said TimesTen is targeted at mid-tier real-time application requirements, and Berkeley DB at high-performance data management.
Oracle also said it has formed a new global business unit to handle the customers and partner needs related to its embedded technologies, as well as new embedded development and testing labs.
