Former Wall St analyst Charles Phillips, recently appointed Oracle vice president, will oversee the company’s marketing following the decision to quit by 14-year company veteran Mark Jarvis. Jarvis was Oracle’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

Oracle’s former head of North American sales George Roberts has also resigned, a move expected since last September’s appointment of Keith Block as executive vice president in charge of North American consulting, sales and application development marketing.

Company chief executive Ellison announced the resignations in an e-mail to Oracle employees, circulated on Monday.

An Oracle spokesperson said yesterday marketing has been added to Phillip’s list of responsibilities. Jarvis drove Oracle’s advertising, corporate, e-business suite and internet platform marketing, and oversaw Oracle’s E-Business and Technology Networks.

Phillips, who joined Oracle in May, has advocated an acquisition strategy to help business development and was named, with Ellison, by JD Edwards & Co as a defendant in a $1.7bn lawsuit the company has brought against Oracle. JD Edwards claims Oracle is attempting to disrupt its merger with PeopleSoft with an illusory offer to buy PeopleSoft.

Oracle’s spokesperson would not comment on whether Phillips would now take an active role in marketing, by targeting efforts towards PeopleSoft’s customers and shareholders.

She added no announcement has been made of a replacement for Jarvis, saying Jarvis had taken a personal decision to leave the company and is not joining any competitors.

Oracle, meanwhile, has also appointed former US army lieutenant general Joseph Kellogg as senior vice president in charge of heading the company’s homeland security systems office.
