ORACLE AND THE PERILS OF MS C

By CBR Staff Writer

Quark Inc is not the only company driving users mad with incompatible releases of its products and upgrades not freely available: users of Oracle Corp’s Oracle 6 are in a horrible bind when they come to the point where they want to embed SQL calls into their C programs – the Oracle release supports only Microsoft Corp C 6.0, which is no longer available now Microsoft is at version 8 – and if you happen to have an earlier version of C – we’ve got 5.1 – if you can find a copy of 6.0, you can’t upgrade, you have to pay full price because you can only upgrade to C version 8 now; alternatively, you can always wait until February, when Oracle will have a version of its Pro C pre-compiler that does work with C version 8.0.
