Oracle moves to common cloud offering

Technology giant becomes OpenStack Foundation corporate sponsor.

By Joe Curtis

Oracle has become one of the OpenStack Foundation’s corporate sponsors.

It means Oracle now plans to integrate OpenStack’s cloud management components into its own products, including its Solaris, Linux, and VM offerings.

The move represents something of a change in policy from Oracle, which many considered to be closed-off, but which is now utilising OpenStack to provide a common cloud offering, rather than its own one.

Chief corporate architect at Oracle, Edward Screven, said: "Our goal is to give customers greater choice and flexibility in how they use Oracle products and services in public and private clouds."

Solaris VP Markus Flierl added: "By integrating OpenStack with Oracle Solaris, we can allow customers to use OpenStack as a common cloud management infrastructure across Oracle SPARC and x86 systems as well as our storage products.

"We understand our customers need to have common management interfaces, rather than being locked into proprietary ones."

APIs mean Oracle customers will be able to move data between Exalogic to the public cloud and back.
