The subscription-based Opera Mobile Accelerator routes requested traffic through an Opera proxy server, where unnecessary elements are stripped out and pages compressed. Oslo, Norway-based Opera said web page rendering speed can be improved by up to 250% using the service.
Opera Mobile Accelerator is similar in concept to the ThunderHawk mobile web browser/proxy combination from font technology vendor Bitstream Inc.
The service is available to users of most Symbian-based smart phones, although a browser upgrade may be necessary for users of Sony Ericsson P800 or P900 devices. The service costs 12 euros ($14.5) for three months, 20 euros ($24.2) for six months, and 30 euros ($36.3) for a year’s use.
