OpenCloud‘s application server has been used for the first ever demonstration of a fully virtualised VoLTE stack on a live network.

The demonstration was conducted by Telekom Austria Group subsidiary Vip Mobile via its commercial network.

Whilst telecoms functions are usually deployed into the network as physical equipment, network function virtualisation (NFV) deploys the functions virtually on server clouds, reducing costs and time-to-market as well as increasing flexibility.

The technology will be demonstrated at Mobile World Congress next month.

Guenther Ottendorfer, CTO Telekom Austria Group comments: "NFV is a paradigm shift for the global telecom industry but also shows that the game the industry is playing is only about to begin, with numerous innovations on the horizon which will further enhance the customer´s experience."

Ottendorfer adds: "NFV has signalled a new optimism within the industry, with the potential of offering huge opportunities to re-engineer and optimise network infrastructure and deliver better service for our customers."

"We are delighted to work with Telekom Austria Group and Vip Mobile to set the new benchmark for virtualised VoLTE deployment," said Phillip Stubbs, CTO at OpenCloud. "Open, virtualised service layers provide a platform for sustainable and competitive innovation.

"Using cloud-based VoLTE gives operators the advantages of reduced cost and agility to deliver new services that are unique to them and valued by their customers," he concluded.
