As far as its Unix plans are concerned, Hewlett-Packard Co seems to have firmed up its committment to the Open Software Foundation’s operating system, saying that HP-UX will be only OSF/X-compatible in the future, and that it has no committment to any part of AT&T Unix System V.4. The company will continue to offer its proprietary MPE operating system on the HP 3000, and its HP-UX Unixalike on the HP 9000, and will not run both together on any system. Unlike DEC, which has made a long-term committment to integrating its VMS and Ultrix operating systems, Hewlett says it has no plans to integrate the two, the only concession being that MPE will be developed to adhere to the Posix standard, meaning that HP-UX applicatons can be run by MPE users, and that MPE-based systems can be tendered in bids for US Federal contracts.
