The Open Software Foundation has submitted Motif to the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers for a direct ballot as the de jure graphical user interface standard, and says the Foundation user environment special interest group has volunteered to participate as the ballot review committee. In its announcement, the Foundation, with careless disregard for its infinitives, says the proposal represents a concerted effort to finally resolve issues that have undergone long debate in the IEEE process. However, the move will doubtless succeed only in heating things up, since AT&T Co is expected to try to counter it by submitting Open Look as the standard. The Open Software Foundation’s proposal offers the Motif Style Guide and Application Environment Specification as the basis of the standard. The Foundation anticipates having a base document ready for first ballot in July.
