The SGML Open consortium, which has been discussing and setting standards for SGML and other structured informational standards since 1993, has changed its name to Oasis, which stands for the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards. The name change reflects its interests beyond SGML, which is the basis for HTML and XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and mainly seems like an attempt to increase its role within the development of XML in particular, the discussion of which is held under the aegis of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). SGML itself is an ISO standard for the interchange of documents and structured information objects.
