Ontos Inc, Burlington, Massachusetts has announced Ontos Studio, an interactive front-end development tool so Ontos developers can build graphical user interfaces and store the interface components for re-use directly in the Ontos database, now up to release 2.2. The tool introduces new High Concurrency Object technology to support the demands of workgroup applications with high levels of concurrent users. High Concurrency Object enables many users to access and update specific objects, such as name directories, simultaneously. The company says Studio streamlines application development by using a single object model shared by the database, application code and user interface. Studio supports X Window 11.4 with Motif. Ontos plans to provide support for 80386 and 80486 personal computers running Santa Cruz Unix this month. It will hit the RS/6000 and HP 9000 Series 700 at a later date. Ontos Release 2.2 now supports the ObjectCenter development environment for C++ from CenterLine and Objectworks ++ from ParcPlace Systems Inc. Ontos will provide a Smalltalk V/PM interface to its database on OS/2 this summer with Smalltalk-80 support for Unix following later on. The price of Studio plus the Ontos DB, tools, training and consulting ranges from $25,000 to $150,000, depending on the number of users and type of server. A single-user licence to Ontos Studio starts at $5,500.
