Only 1% of UK adults own smartwatches

The survey found a 44% increase in awareness about the devices.

By CBR Staff Writer

Researchers from marketing research organisation Ipsos Mori has revealed that awareness about Smart watches has increased in UK, but most consumers did not wish to own the devices.

The research, which surveyed 987 individuals, found that Smart watch awareness has increased 44% since the fourth quarter of 2012.

The Guardian reported Ipsos Mori associate director Andrew Maguire as saying: "The increases in awareness, no doubt driven by this year’s high-profile product launches, haven’t yet converted into purchases, with only 1% of UK adults claiming to own or use one."

The increase in awareness has been triggered by the introduction of Android Wear watches from Samsung, LG, Motorola, and Sony.

The introduction of Apple watch has also significantly improved the awareness amongst users, according to the research.

Awareness of contactless payments via smartphones, cloud computing and 3D printers was high, but only 2% of the surveyed individuals claimed to own one of the devices.

According to reports, the lack of apps and function combined with a hefty price tag have caused users to resist buying the accessory.
