The system, which is shortly expected to cover a dozen other hospitals, is said to allow doctors and physicians prompt access to important patient information via digital records held at other institutions.

The system is expected to help reduce medical errors and unnecessary treatments, and hold down costs.

Hospitals currently linked through the system include Angel Medical Center, Haywood Regional Medical Center, Rutherford Hospital and Transylvania Community Hospital. The Citizen Times said another 12 hospitals in the WNC Health Network are expected to be linked over the next 12 months.
