AOL has confirmed plans to shut down its 15-year-old Winamp software and related service and website by 20 December 2013.

The popular media player allowed playing MP3s and digital music during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

AOL said in a statement that Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013.

"Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download," AOL said.

"Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release.

"Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years," said the note on the Winamp.com website."

Basically, the media player was targeted at Windows, while the beta versions for Android and Mac OS X and an alpha for Linux had alsobeen launched.

Claimed to be the first player to offer streaming music via support for SHOUTCast, Winamp also supports all well-liked file formats such as Ogg Vorbis.
