ON-LINE VOTING – THE ROAD TO A NERD DICTATORSHIP?

By CBR Staff Writer

British Telecommunications Plc’s in-house futurologist, Ian Pearson, predicts on-line voting by 2010: does he have access to the Net? The Yahoo site has been promoting digital democracy since the UK’s election campaign began and its pre-election straw poll, predicts Labor 44%, Liberal Democrat 28%, Conservatives 16%. Yahoo’s hook is: If democracy is government of all the people, by all the people, for all the people; why not use the Internet to cut out the politicians?; why not indeed? But what sort of democracy would we have when 91.7% of the voters polled were men. Pearson probably didn’t have a nerd dictatorship in mind, so maybe he could give us the figures on how many women might be using the Internet by 2010.
