Ing C Olivetti & Co SpA has entered the market for subcompact notebook computers with the Quaderno, a 2 lbs 3 oz 8.3 by 5.8 machine that comes with MS-DOS pre-loaded, 1Mb memory, a 20Mb disk and a facility for recording sound so that it can be used for taking spoken notes; the machine was designed by Olivetti and is being made for the Ivrea company by its joint venture with Y-E Data Inc in Japan; it will cost about $1,100 in most European markets through electrical retailers, and Olivetti is looking for a partner to help it market it in the US, where it has been talking to its present partner Digital Equipment Corp, but would prefer the machine to go out under the Olivetti name.
