Trouble with these continentals is that they are still stuck in the dinosaur mind-set of the state socialist, so that instead of demanding that the European Commission say that it will licence up to a dozen or so pan-European telecommunications companies to set up high-speed networks that would compete with the national monopolies as the UK is already doing, while leaving luddite countries to refuse to allow them to land so that those countries would be bypassed and most of the business would go to the likes of the Netherlands, the UK and Denmark, Ing C Olivetti & Co SpA chairman Carlo De Benedetti wants Community taxpayers to finance the building of a vast bureaucratic computer and telecommunications network, which would no doubt come to be as efficient and profitable as the German postal service.
