At the same Rome meeting, Ing C Olivetti & Co SpA chairman Carlo De Benedetti says that he too first read that Olivetti was negotiating to distribute Power Macintoshes in Italy, Spain and Latin America when he saw the morning paper, but he avoided commenting on the report by switching to attack the article’s contention that Olivetti has abandoned any technological development – he said that Olivetti was a member of PowerOpen and was developing a PowerPC board and Olivetti Telemedia is working on new projects and technologies that can be marketed today; he declined to say how much longer Olivetti would continue to offer Digital Equipment Corp Alpha machines now that the Massachusetts firm had sold its shares.
