Oki Electric’s planned factory in Cumbernauld, Scotland (CI No 716) – in part of the abandoned Burroughs factory, will manufacture matrix printers for the European market in competition with market leader Epson: the company has formed Oki (UK) Ltd capitalised at UKP2m, and will initially invest UKP8.5m in the plant, which is due to open by year-end, starting with 230 employees and rising to 340 in two years, starting by producing 17,000 printers a month before diversifying into other computer and office kit.
