Dating site OkCupid has urged its users to ditch Mozilla’s Firefox browser in protest against Mozilla’s new CEO, Brendan Eich, who opposes gay marriage.
Directing consumers to use other internet browsers, including Chrome, the online dating site said: "We would therefore prefer that our users not use Mozilla software to access OKCupid," the dating site noted.
Eich, former CTO of Mozilla, was promoted as the company’s CEO last week, and his donation of $1,000 to support Proposition 8, an initiative to ban same-sex marriage, was met with outrage from third-party developers and employees.
After Eich’s promotion, app development firm Rarebit reportedly pulled its apps from Firefox.
Rarebit founder Hampton Catlin said: "As a married gay couple who are co-founders of this venture, we have chosen to boycott all Mozilla projects."
However, Eich addressed the criticism and sketched out plan to support LGBT-friendly policies at Mozilla.
"I can only ask for your support to have the time to "show, not tell"; and in the meantime express my sorrow at having caused pain," Eich added.
