Giving plenty of advance warning, the UK Office of Telecommunications has agreed in principle to a plan to increase the UK telephone number capacity vastly by adding an extra digit between the STD zero and the area code: for fixed network phone calls, the additional number will be 1 with the other nine available digits used to denote cellular lines, personal telephone numbers and such; the code for an international call will change from 010 to 001 – but you can all go back to sleep and forget about it for a year or two, because the changeover is set for the 1994 Easter weekend.
