Simultaneously, 3Com announced four new products designed to add value to 3+Open LAN Manager networks. Targeted at mixed OS/2 and Unix LAN Manager environments – particularly in government, universities and large organisations – 3+Open TCP NetBIOS works with 3+Open LAN Manager to manage the exchange of data between network workstations and servers running Hewlett-Packard LAN Manager/X and OS/2 LAN Manager on a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol-based network; with the new version of 3+Open TCP with Demand Protocol Architecture, workstations will also be able to access Unix hosts through Advanced Research Projects Agency-standard applications such as File Transfer Protocol and Telnet. Another new product, 3+Open XNS, is being offered to provide 3+Open MS-DOS user access to host systems through communications servers running the XNS protocol for the Xerox Network System. 3Com will also be offering the X500-based network naming system 3+Open Directory as a migration from its current 3+Name and 3+Open Name services. For use on large, multi-vendor wide area networks, 3+Open Directory automatically updates itself throughout the network and replicates this information across a number of different servers. It comes with a converter, name gateway and directory service agents, allowing existing naming data to be converted to 3+Open Directory. Finally, 3Com introduced 3+Open Menus, a menu system designed to allow the user transparent access to a variety of applications over multi-vendor networks, with the customisable menu displaying only those applications available to a specific workstation. 3+Open TCP NetBIOS is available now for UKP450 per server; 3+Open/XNS next month at UKP250 for a single user licence, UKP950 for 10 users, UKP1,900 for 30 users; 3+Open with DPA version 1.1 will also be available in July at UKP315 for a single user, UKP1,350 for ten users and UKP2,500 for 30 users. 3+Open Directory will ship from the third quarter of this year; no pricing has been given for the Director, and 3Com says that Menus will be bundled free with future LAN Manager systems.
