Dutch printing and photocopier company Oce van der Grinten NV is adding to its printing-on-demand range of hardware with the DemandStream 8000, claiming it is the fastest high-quality system on the market, capable of printing up to 28,200 A4 pages an hour. Entering in at the top end of the companys products, the DemandStream 8000 incorporates high speed print engines based on LED technology with a 600 dots per inch resolution. It consists of three main components; a high speed printer, the printer server which controls the entire print stream process, and the finishing equipment. The company says the product, which is likely to retail for around ú500,000 in the UK and weighs some seven tonnes, is intended for the production of product handouts and manuals, as well as books. Because the system is a digital one, Oce says the DemandStream 8000 reduces the amount of wastage. Manuscripts or documents can be stored in the system’s memory, making it easy to reprint or make additions, should extra copies be required. With its main target markets being the industrial and manufacturing sector, Oce’s business unit director in the UK, John Goodwin didnt seem to think the increasing trend of companies supplying manuals and so on, on compact discs, would be a problem for it. The DemandStream 8000 is already available in the US and customers will be able to purchase it across Europe by the end of the month.
