ObjectWeb allies with Chinese group for open source

The European open source ObjectWeb consortium has inked an agreement with a Chinese software firm to construct a new common open source middleware platform.

Under the terms of a deal signed with Orientware, a Chinese software group formed to commercialize middleware components developed by China’s High-Tech R&D Program (HTRDP), a government-driven initiative run by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology.

Orientware is now expected to release some of its middleware components as open-source code.

ObjectWeb is a non-profit open source organization was formed in 2002 by France Telecom, Groupe Bull and France’s National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA). It has 50 members who are collaborating on several dozen open source projects.

Earlier last week ObjectWeb announced it is adding business intelligence to its growing middleware stack through one of its members’ Spago J2EE framework.

Other members have already contributed to the development of a J2EE-compliant application server called Jonas which is used by Red Hat Inc as the basis for its Red Hat Application Server.

This is the second major alliance for ObjectWeb in China. In May this year the consortium signed an agreement with the Guangzhou Middleware Research Center to drive greater adoption of open source middleware in China.
