The mega-merger between WorldCom Inc and MCI Corp has received protests from two separate quarters, both claiming that the merger will give US consumers a raw deal. The first protest, from Jesse Jackson’s rainbow/Push coalition, asks the federal communications commission to block the merger as it will be financed by redlining and cream-skimming at the expense of low income and minority consumers. The Communications Workers of America urged the FCC to stop the merger as it will stifle telecoms competition and hand control of the Internet over to WorldCom, as well as causing around 75,000 job losses in the industry. It says MCI also is not going to continue to invest in US consumers, and instead concentrate on business customers.
