Object Design Inc is one of the few survivors from the days when everyone thought that object databases would sweep away their relational counterparts. Now the company is having a new lease of life with its lightweight ObjectStore PSE data store, which is written in Java and can run against its full scale ObjectStore database as it uses the same APIs. Yesterday, the company won Sun Microsystems Inc as its latest customer for the product. Sun will use ObjectStore PSE as a fast Java database with a small footprint for its Java Workshop 2.0 integrated development environment, and is intended to enable Java programmers to write Java database applications that are portable over the internet. Symantec Corp, Borland International, Asymetrix and Roaster Technologies are previous customers for the product.
