The Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) plans to create a standard for Extensible Resources Identifiers (XRIs), compatible with Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs).

URIs identify items like pictures, text and other files, making them available under a variety of naming schemas and access methods like HTTP or FTP.

A spokesman from OASIS said XRIs would ensure interoperable, automated data interchange across distributed applications and trust domains for applications. The group said XRIs would provide exchange, linking lifetime synchronization of e-business cards, public keys and other common identity attributes across distributed directories.

Other potential uses include data synchronization across multiple user devices like desktops, laptops, PDA, phones and automated web site registration.
