Commenting on stories in the Boston Herald and New York Post that it planned big new job cuts, Nynex Corp would say only that it had previously announced plans to reduce costs by 30% to 40% and certainly our workforce will be downsized over time; the reports say Nynex could lay off as much as one-third of its work force in the next three years; they quoted an internal memorandum saying that Nynex plans to cut a total of about 22,000 jobs during the three years and employees would leave through lay-offs as well as retirements and attrition, with cuts affecting both management and workers, with one manager eliminated for about every six workers; the company has already reduced its workforce by about one-sixth in recent years; Nynex’s New York Telephone unit jogged the arm of the regulators by telling the Post the cutback numbers are only targets and may not be as severe if Nynex gets clearance to offer cable television.
