Nvidia Corp says it has now shipped over 10 million mainstream 3D graphics processors into the PC market via its various OEMs. These include PC vendors Compaq, CompUSA, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, HP, IBM, Micron, NEC Corp and NEC Computer Systems Division, and graphics accelerator makers including A-Open, Asustek, Canopus, Creative Technology, Diamond Multimedia, ELSA, Hercules, Mirostar, Prolink and Yuan Yuan.
Market share figures from John Peddie Associates for 3D chip shipments in 1998 put Nvidia in fourth place. ATI technologies Inc was first, followed by S3 Inc second and Matrox Corp third. But Nvidia claims to dominate the performance category with a 44% market share, and says the Peddie figures show it has shipped more 128-bit 3D processors than the rest of the industry combined. It is seeing growth rates of 65%. The TNT2 chip, which began shipping in April, has now passed the 1 million mark.
Some 89 million 3D chips were sold in total during 1998, a growth rate of 116% over last year, which total revenue increased by 84% from last year. The 2D market, however, declined 54% in shipments and 63% in revenue, with 24.5m units shipped, generating $196m in revenue.
