Nvidia sues Qualcomm, Samsung over GPU patent infrngement

Company's technology is used in Samsung's latest Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge.

By CBR Staff Writer

Chipmaker Nvidia has filed patent infringement lawsuits against its rivals Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics over allegedly abusing its graphics processing technology.

According to the suit, Qualcomm and Samsung had reportedly included Nvidia’s patented graphics technologies in Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge, in addition to other devices, without its consent.

Nvidia chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang was quoted by Reuters as saying: "They’re using our technology for free in their devices today and they’re shipping an enormous number of devices."

"Today we’re focused on Samsung and Qualcomm, and we continue to have productive conversations with a lot of other companies out there."

Further, Nvidia also called on the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to ban shipments of Samsung devices integrating ARM’s Mali or Imagination’s PowerVR graphics architectures, including Qualcomm’s graphics system.

Samsung said in a statement: "Following a thorough review of the complaint, we will take all measures necessary against NVIDIA’s claims."

The case follows Nvidia’s decision last June to license its graphics cores and visual computing patents to other chip manufacturers as part of its efforts to broaden its revenue base.
