Numerex signs international agreement with Telcel

Telcel to use GE Security's alarm monitoring panel

By CBR Staff Writer

Numerex, a US-based provider of machine-to-machine network services, has signed an international agreement with Telcel, a subsidiary of Mexican mobile operator America Movil, and GE Security, to provide supervised cellular alarm monitoring service for Telcel’s customer base.

According to Numerex, the new product offering is scheduled to launch in late April 2009 and will eliminate the requirement of a traditional phone line for alarm monitoring, rendered useless when traditional lines are cut or out of service.

Numerex has said that the new product uses Telcel’s GPRS network to send over an IP connection full data events to a central station in order to supply complete information to responding emergency units. In addition, it has the ability to deliver text messages to a subscriber’s e-mail-enabled devices. Numerex will provide the complete range of gateway and backend services necessary for the efficient operation of the entire wireless security network.

Mike Marett, COO at Numerex, said: Telcel’s selection underlines the service quality that GE and Numerex are already bringing to the US residential security customers. It is an operational blueprint for Latin America in general where there is a growing demand for such services.

Telcel claims to be the leading wireless services provider in Mexico with more than 56 million subscribers and about 71% of the Mexican wireless market at the end of December 2008. In operation since 1989, Telcel offers a wide array of voice and data services in the largest wireless network in Mexico using GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA technologies. Telcel is a subsidiary of America Movil.
