NTT TO FIND NEW OUTLETS FOR CAPTAIN

By CBR Staff Writer

The way the Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Captain viewdata system used to be shown off with such pride and flourish at UK viewdata shows in the late 1970s, one might have been forgiven for concluding that the system was already a runaway success back home in Japan – but far from it: it was introduced as a public service only two years ago, and after the early pioneers signed on to use it, there has been little further interest; anxious to find new outlets for the service, NTT has now come up with what sounds like a thoroughly danagerous idea – Captain for motor cars; it has developed a prototype car terminal and hopes automakers will start installing the things in new models as early as next summer.
