NTT Corp has developed a new high density memory for storing audio and visual data which is much smaller than a CD or DVD. The card-sized memory can, in theory, store up to 100Gb of data, making it an ideal medium to be used with mobile computing devices such as MP3 players. The opto-electronic design uses holographic techniques to retrieve data from the card. The card is currently a read-only design, but NTT is working on a writable version. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said that NTT plans a to produce prototype 224Mb version of the card along with playback equipment by next spring.
