Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp has developed an expert system called SCAT used for designing computer installation layouts: variables such as the data processing capacity, size of disks used, communications system software are input, and outputs such as a list of the necessary devices and configuration are output automatically – sounds similar to DEC’s expert system for automatically generating custommer configurations; the knowledge base is constructed for NTT’s DIPS-11 small mainframe, but in future the system will be expanded to include other machines.
