Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp is considering acquiring a stake in digital satellite broadcasting service PerfecTV through one of Nippon’s subsidiaries. The comment follows a NHK report that the Nippon Telegraph group would buy a 29% stake in PerfecTV for $2.7m, when it doubles its capital to $93m. Japanese law forbids telecommunications companies from entering the broadcasting business but entry via a subsidiary is permitted. PerfecTV, owned by Itochu Corp and three other trading companies will launch Japan’s first digital satellite broadcasting service in October. Japan Sky Broadcasting, owned by News Corp and Softbank Corp, may ally with PerfecTV, News chief Rupert Murdoch told Japan last week.
