Japan’s largest mobile service operator NTT Docomo said that it has entered into an agreement with five companies, including Fujitsu, Fujitsu Semiconductor, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications, and Samsung Electronics to develop chips for smartphones.
This joint venture company will be floated by the end of March 2012. Docomo is planning to invest $5.8m to set up this wholly owned subsidiary, which will be known as Communication Platform Planning company.
The JV will focus on developing products for LTE and LTE-Advanced mobile communication standards, which will be sold worldwide, the company said in a press release.
The operations will be overseen Docomo CEO Mitsunobu Komori, it was added.
