NTT Communications boosts submarine cable capacity to 100Gbps

The technology has increased PC-1 system capacity over 2.5 times to 8.4 terabits per second.

By CBR Staff Writer

NTT Communications has deployed the world’s first 100Gbps digital coherent technology on the transpacific submarine cable system that links the US and Japan.

Following the deployment, design capacity of the company’s PC-1 system claimed to increase over 2.5 times to 8.4 terabits per second.

According to the company, the technology was formed by optically improving the PC-1’s network architecture, including strategically placed optical repeaters and an enhanced optical fibre layout.

Digital coherent is a data transmission technology that improves spectral efficiency through multi-level modulation, such as phase modulation and polarisation multiplexing.

The technology has been developed to address the rapid increase in data traffic driven by the increased use of smartphones and tablets, music/video downloading, cloud computing and services such as social networking.

In October 2011, the company had showcases 100Gbps optical transmission using digital coherent technology on its US-Japan route.

The company also plans to deploy the 100Gbps optical transmission technology in its Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE) by the end of 2014, which links major cities in Asia.
