The Wall Street Journal quoted anonymous sources in its Friday issue that NTP would accept 5.7% of future US sales of BlackBerry in a settlement deal.

The figure is what a federal court awarded NTP, in 2002, in what has become a drawn-out legal battle between the two companies.

NTP declined to comment about the WSJ report to US media.

The exact amount that the royalty payment would cost RIM is unclear, but some say it would likely be less than the $1bn that pundits have predicted.

Unidentified sources that claim to be close to the case have reportedly said that RIM insists it has no plans to settle with NTP.
